Professor Bekker’s research uses decision science, health psychology, and applied health research to investigate people’s decision making about healthcare, and to design, implement and evaluate interventions supporting people’s informed decision making between options. In collaboration with health professionals and patients, she has designed over 40 patient decision aids in paper and web formats for research and use in UK health services.
Dr Bekker published one of the first systematic reviews of interventions facilitating informed decision making in healthcare, and carried out one of the first randomised controlled trials of decision analysis within usual-care consultations for women making prenatal diagnosis decisions for Down Syndrome. Recently she lead a systematic review for the International Patient Decision Aids Standards collaboration on the role of patient stories within decision aids, and acceptability research for The Dialysis Decision Aid Booklet. The Dialysis Decision Aid Booklet is endorsed as best practice by the International Peritoneal Dialysis Society and European Renal Best Practice group, and Highly Commended by the British Medical Association Patient Information Awards (2014).
